What you’ll be doing
As an apprentice in civil and structural engineering, you will play a vital role in supporting engineering teams through various stages of design and project delivery, gaining hands-on experience and developing technical skills essential for your career.
- Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship skills:
- You will work within the Transport and Infrastructure Design Team, assisting engineers at all levels by producing technical drawings and design solutions using AutoCAD and Civil 3D software. Your tasks will span the entire project lifecycle, from initial concepts to construction and handover, across diverse sectors. You will learn to create, edit, and analyse 3D models and 2D drawings, developing proficiency in civil engineering drafting techniques and software applications. Close supervision and mentoring will support your growth in industry knowledge, practical skills, and professional development. The apprenticeship typically lasts 36 months, including day-release college training, leading to Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician qualification and eligibility for Engineering Technician registration
- Structural Engineering Technician Apprenticeship skills:
- You will also work in a building and structures environment, you will assist team leaders and senior members on projects ranging from high-rise developments to large warehouses. You will acquire knowledge of structural design principles, construction methods, and project management essentials such as time management, communication, and teamwork. Training will focus on CAD and Revit software, enabling you to contribute to the design, delivery, and maintenance of infrastructure and buildings. You will also learn to identify hazards and assess risks, complying with health and safety regulations. The apprenticeship includes formal education alongside practical work, preparing you for professional registration and future career progression.
- Information Management
- You will be introduced to the BS EN ISO19650 principles. This will then move onto include complying with the specific information requirements for each project. An understanding how your work fits into the wider information management process will be natured throughout. You will be given the opportunity to acquire an awareness of the various BIM documentation such as BIM Execution Plans and Task Information Delivery Plans.
Key Skills and Learning Outcomes
- Mastery of CAD software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit) for creating detailed technical drawings and BIM models.
- Application of civil and structural engineering principles, including calculations, data analysis, and design techniques.
- Understanding and implementation of health, safety, and environmental policies.
- Development of project management skills, including planning, quality assurance, and teamwork.
- Effective communication tailored to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and adherence to ethical standards.
What you’ll bring:
The ideal candidate will have skills and experience in the following areas:
- 5 GCSEs at Grades 9-5 (A*- C) including Maths, English and Science or their equivalent. Apprentices without level 2 English and Maths will need to have achieve this prior to taking the end point assessment.
- An aptitude to problem solving and a passion for learning new skills
- Good communication, organisation and team skills
- Demonstrable enthusiasm, ambition and a willingness to learn
- Computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, and ideally some experience using AutoCAD, however this is not essential
- Take a responsible approach to health and safety
- Proactive and receptive to constructive advice and guidance
- Willing to learn new skills and adapt
- Know one’s limitations and when to ask for help or escalate
- Work independently when appropriate and take responsibility and pride in your work
- Demonstrate a positive approach to problem solving
- Effectively contribute to discussions as part of a team
